We're thrilled to welcome Will Martin to the Beam team as our new Head of Sales! We sat down with Will to learn more about his background, his perspective on the industry, and why he's excited about Beam's mission.
Tell us a little about your background—what led you to a career in construction technology?
I didn't intentionally choose a career in ConTech. It chose me.
After graduating with an Environmental Science degree in New Orleans, I spent four years at an Environmental Consulting company before realizing I wanted more direct impact in my career. I threw my degree plan in the trash and joined Levelset, the only software startup in New Orleans—which happened to be a Construction Technology company.
Since that career switch in 2017, I've helped make daily work easier for folks chasing the American dream. The people I work with—from hammer-swinging trade school graduates to seasoned business owners—are building more than just products for customers. They're building futures for themselves and the next generation. Making their hard work a little easier has been more fulfilling than I ever imagined.
What excites you most about joining Beam?
The numbers don't lie—64% of SMB construction companies fail within their first five years, compared to 50% of small businesses overall. Why? Because traditional Project Management solutions add financial capabilities as an afterthought.
Beam has changed the game by building financial management as the foundation and project management on top. This bridges the gap between bookkeepers in Quickbooks and PMs tracking projects in Excel. I truly believe we can fix this problem for SMB construction companies and help more of them succeed.
How do you see technology transforming the industry, and where does Beam fit in?
Technology is mission-critical for an industry facing major headwinds like labor shortages and fluctuating material prices.
What excites me most is that Beam integrates accounting, project management, and payments on a single platform, giving project managers financial control while keeping accounting teams updated in real time. This helps bridge the critical gap between accounting and field operations—a persistent challenge for thousands of businesses—and helps construction businesses grow with reduced risk.
If you could build your dream house, what architectural style would you choose, and why?
My dream house would be mostly Spanish Style, and include a Southern Style white wraparound porch with rocking chairs. I love the look of clay tile roofs and plastered exteriors, and some of my favorite evenings were spent in some rocking chairs on a porch in New Orleans.
